Dissolving Education

What is dissolving?

This page provides general information about dissolving previous volumising treatment.

Some patients seek an assessment following previous volumising treatment performed by another practitioner.

Dissolving is generally considered only when clinically appropriate and is not routinely recommended where other suitable management options are available.

In the first instance, we always recommend contacting the practitioner who performed your original treatment. They are familiar with your treatment plan, understand the products and techniques that were used, and are usually best placed to assess your concerns and discuss appropriate management options. Many practitioners also have review processes in place to assess treatment outcomes and determine whether any further management is appropriate.

If returning to your original practitioner is not appropriate or not possible, we are happy to provide an independent consultation to assess your concerns and discuss whether dissolving may be appropriate.

Depending on your individual circumstances, management may include allowing additional time for healing, monitoring the area, dissolving previous treatment or developing a staged treatment plan.

In some situations, if you are a new patient attending House of Define following previous treatment elsewhere, we may recommend dissolving previous treatment before commencing your new treatment plan to help achieve the best possible outcome. This recommendation is based on your individual anatomy, treatment history, treatment goals and clinical assessment.

Every situation is different. Not all concerns require dissolving, and in some cases allowing additional time for healing or settling may be the most appropriate approach.

When is dissolving recommended?

Dissolving is generally considered only when it is clinically appropriate and is not routinely recommended where other suitable management options are available.

In many situations, allowing additional time for healing, review appointments or an alternative management approach may achieve a satisfactory outcome without dissolving.

Our goal is always to recommend the most appropriate management plan for your individual circumstances rather than dissolving as a first option.

How is it assessed whether dissolving is appropriate?

Not every concern requires dissolving.

Your practitioner will complete a thorough clinical assessment, taking into consideration your treatment history, medical history, current concerns, facial anatomy and treatment goals.

The assessment also considers factors such as whether previous treatment has settled appropriately, whether there are visible irregularities, asymmetry, lumps, migration, contour concerns, functional concerns or aesthetic concerns that may benefit from further management.

In some situations, allowing additional time for healing or settling may be the most appropriate recommendation. In others, dissolving or an alternative management approach may be recommended.

When might dissolving be considered?

Dissolving may be considered for a range of concerns following previous volumising treatment.

Examples may include treatment outcomes that are not as expected, treatment that has changed over time, visible lumps or irregularities, product migration, asymmetry, an overfilled appearance, or situations where previous treatment is preventing a new treatment plan from achieving the desired outcome.

In some cases, patients may simply decide that they no longer wish to keep their previous treatment or would prefer a different treatment approach.

Not every concern requires dissolving. Following a clinical assessment, your practitioner will discuss whether dissolving, observation or an alternative management approach is the most appropriate option for your individual circumstances.

When will I see results?

The effects of dissolving may begin to become apparent quite quickly, however the timeframe varies between individuals and depends on factors such as the amount of previous treatment, the treatment area and your individual response.

Many patients notice changes within the first 24 to 48 hours, however we generally recommend allowing approximately two weeks before reassessment. This allows the area to settle and helps determine whether any further dissolving may be appropriate.

In some situations, more than one dissolving appointment may be recommended to achieve the desired outcome.

Important Allergy Information

Please tell us if you have previously experienced a significant allergic reaction or anaphylaxis following a bee sting.

This information is important when assessing whether dissolving may be appropriate and should be discussed before treatment.

DISSOLVING TREATMENT AFTERCARE

 AFTER YOUR TREATMENT

• Avoid wearing makeup on the treated area FOR 4 HOURS

• Avoid exercise, excessive heat and activities that cause heavy sweating FOR 24 HOURS

• Avoid active skincare ingredients such as retinol, vitamin C and exfoliating acids on the treated area FOR 24 HOURS

• Avoid touching, rubbing, massaging or placing pressure on the treated area FOR 24 HOURS

• Avoid facials and skin treatments including laser, microneedling, microdermabrasion and chemical peels FOR 2 WEEKS

EXPECTED TEMPORARY EFFECTS

It is normal to experience temporary treatment effects. Should you have any concerns, please contact your practitioner.

• Swelling

• Redness

• Bruising

• Tenderness or mild discomfort

• Temporary bluish discolouration of the treated area

• Temporary changes to the treated area as previous treatment dissolves. The area may temporarily feel softer, less supported, slightly crepey or more wrinkled until it settles.

ALLERGIC REACTION

The most important serious risk following dissolving treatment is a significant allergic reaction. Although uncommon, this requires urgent medical assessment and treatment.

For this reason, your practitioner will ask you to remain in the clinic for a short period following treatment to ensure you are feeling well before you leave.

If you develop any of the following symptoms after leaving the clinic, call 000 immediately or attend your nearest Emergency Department:

• Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath

• Swelling of the tongue or throat

• Tightness in the chest

• Significant swelling that continues to worsen

• Vomiting

• Light-headedness or collapse

• Any other symptoms suggestive of a severe allergic reaction

• If you are seriously concerned about your condition

RESULTS & REVIEW

Many patients notice changes within the first 24–48 HOURS, however the timeframe varies between individuals.

We generally recommend allowing approximately 2 WEEKS before reassessment. This allows the area to settle and helps determine whether any further dissolving may be appropriate.

If you have any concerns once the initial settling period has passed, please contact your practitioner to arrange a review.

Frequently Asked Questions

The cost of dissolving varies depending on your individual circumstances.

Factors such as the volume of previous treatment, the type and brand of the previous product, how long the product has been present, the treatment area, whether partial or complete dissolving is recommended, the number of areas requiring treatment and your individual response may all influence the overall treatment plan.

In some situations, more than one dissolving appointment or additional product may be required to achieve the desired outcome.

Because every situation is different, it is not possible to accurately determine the cost of dissolving without first completing a consultation and clinical assessment.

No. Not every concern requires dissolving.

In some situations, allowing additional time for healing or settling may be the most appropriate approach. In others, monitoring the area or an alternative management approach may be recommended.

Not all previous treatments can be dissolved. Whether dissolving is appropriate depends on the type, volume and age of the previous treatment, your individual circumstances and the findings of your clinical assessment.

The number of dissolving appointments required varies between individuals.

Factors such as the volume of previous treatment, the type and brand of the previous product, how long it has been present, the treatment area and your individual response may all influence the number of appointments recommended.

Some patients achieve their desired outcome after a single dissolving appointment, while others may require a staged approach over multiple appointments to safely achieve the desired result.

In most situations, no.

Dissolving continues to work after treatment. If new treatment is performed in the same area too soon, the dissolving process may also affect the new treatment and reduce the intended result.

For this reason, we generally recommend allowing the area to settle before reassessment and considering further treatment.

In some situations, treatment in a different area may still be appropriate. Recommendations are based on your individual treatment plan and clinical assessment.

No.

Every patient is assessed individually. While dissolving may be recommended in some situations, it is not required for everyone.

The decision depends on factors such as your previous treatment, current concerns, anatomy, treatment goals and the findings of your clinical assessment.
