It is important to follow the aftercare advice provided by your practitioner to achieve the best possible results and minimise the risk of complications.
Aftercare recommendations vary between treatments.
General aftercare recommendations apply to all cosmetic treatments, with more treatment-specific aftercare information also provided within each treatment education page where permitted under current TGA regulations.
The general advice below should be followed unless otherwise advised by your medical practitioner.
After treatment, it is important to avoid placing any pressure on the treatment area.
Placing pressure on the treatment area can potentially result in moving the product or exposing the area to bacteria.
Leave the treatment area alone.
Dont rub it! Don't massage it! Don't play with it!
Dont rest your hand on your face or fall asleep on your face!
For 4 hours post treatment
Exercise is not recommended in the first 24 hours following treatment.
Exercise increases blood flow, blood pressure and body temperature, which can contribute to bruising, swelling and discomfort.
Activities that place pressure on the treatment area should also be avoided. This may include jumping during a HIIT class, tight swimming goggles, pressure on your face from a bicycle helmet, or lying on your side during a stretch or yoga session.
Increased sweating may also be problematic, as it can contribute to bruising and swelling, introduce bacteria to the treatment area, and increase the likelihood of touching the area with unclean hands or gym towels.
A walk is fine in the first 24 hours following treatment.
Heat increases blood flow throughout the body, which can contribute to bruising, swelling and discomfort following treatment.
For this reason, it is recommended that the following activities are avoided for 24 hours after treatment:
• Sunbathing
• Spas and hot baths
• Saunas
• Hot yoga / hot mat Pilates
Whilst infection is NOT common following treatment, it is important to follow aftercare instructions to minimise any potential risk.
During treatment, the skin barrier is pierced, creating small entry points through which bacteria may enter.
The best way to reduce the risk of infection is to keep the area clean and leave it alone for the first 4 HOURS following treatment.
Avoid:
• Touching the area
• Rubbing the area
• Massaging the area
• Applying makeup to the treated area
Please remember that makeup brushes, sponges and applicators can harbour bacteria, even if they have recently been cleaned.
Please also avoid pets licking your face for at least 24 hours following treatment.
If the treated area becomes hot, increasingly red, painful, swollen or begins to throb, please contact your practitioner.
Many volumising treatments are made from substances that naturally bind to water within the surrounding tissues. Remaining well hydrated may help these treatments integrate and perform at their best.
Good hydration also supports your body’s normal healing processes following treatment.
To achieve the best possible outcome from your treatment, it is recommended that you remain well hydrated for at least 48 hours following treatment.
Some treatments may cause swelling, tenderness, headaches and/or flu-like symptoms. These symptoms are generally temporary and will self-resolve.
Pain Relief
Anti-inflammatory medications should be avoided where possible, as they may increase bruising or bleeding under the skin. If required, Paracetamol is the preferred pain relief option.
Ice Application
Ice may be used to reduce discomfort, swelling and bruising if required.
Do not apply ice directly to the skin. Always place a clean cloth or paper towel between the ice pack and the skin.
Apply ice with minimal pressure for a maximum of 10 minutes at a time to avoid disruption to the treatment area.
If pain or swelling is outside the expected parameters discussed by your practitioner, it is important to contact your practitioner.
If you have a skincare regimen, it is recommended that you avoid “active” skincare products for the first 24 hours following treatment.
Products containing retinol, vitamin C, exfoliating acids, chemical peels and other active ingredients may increase irritation and sensitivity within the treated area.
A gentle face wash, moisturiser and sunscreen are generally recommended following treatment to keep the skin hydrated and comfortable.
